Question 1

How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?

My response

Traditionally, coming-of-age and teen romance openings often establish young characters through school settings, dramatic social conflict, or stereotypical portrayals of adolescence focused on popularity, relationships, or rebellion. My product uses some familiar genre conventions, such as teenage protagonists, a blossoming connection between two characters, lighthearted montage sequences, and themes of self-discovery. The interaction between Sora and Kaito reflects the common convention of an unexpected first meeting that sparks emotional curiosity, which is often seen in romance dramas. The use of soft dialogue, nostalgic visuals, and montage scenes of shared adventures also reinforces conventions found in slice-of-life and bittersweet youth narratives.

However, my film challenges these conventions by prioritizing creativity, imagination, and emotional vulnerability over superficial teenage stereotypes. Rather than focusing on conflict or romance immediately, the opening centers on artistic expression through sketching, music, and symbolism. Sora is represented as a creative and whimsical teenage girl, challenging the common passive female archetype by making her energetic, expressive, and narratively dominant. Kaito, while quieter, challenges traditional masculine stereotypes because he is emotionally reserved yet deeply introspective, showing sensitivity through music and uncertainty about his future. This subverts the expectation that male teenage characters should be emotionally detached or overly confident.

The product also represents youth as dreamers dealing with identity and future uncertainty, particularly through Kaito’s confession about graduation. This reflects real social issues many teenagers face, such as anxiety surrounding adulthood, self-expression, and personal purpose. By incorporating magical realism elements, such as animated drawings and symbolic visuals, the film presents adolescence as emotionally profound rather than trivial.

Additionally, the film avoids oversexualized or exaggerated portrayals of teenagers often seen in mainstream media, instead offering a wholesome, nostalgic representation that emphasizes friendship, creativity, and emotional honesty. This makes the social group of teenagers feel authentic, relatable, and layered.

Overall, my product combines familiar genre elements with unconventional artistic storytelling to create a fresh representation of adolescence, challenging stereotypes while highlighting creativity, vulnerability, and the emotional complexity of growing up.
